Rather than simply asking whether a condition is covered or not, Vitality looks at the severity and impact of the condition. This means the cover is designed to provide support earlier in the progression of an illness, as well as for more serious or life-changing diagnoses.
Provider documents
Vitality's own guides covering the conditions included at each level, children's cover and later-life Dementia and FrailCare Cover.
What is severity-based cover?
Vitality's Serious Illness Cover pays different amounts depending on how severe the condition is and how much impact it has on day-to-day life.
Instead of only paying when a condition reaches its most advanced stage, Vitality can make partial payments for less severe conditions and larger payments for more serious conditions. Depending on the level of cover selected, payouts can range from 5% up to 100% of the sum assured.
This means:
- A less severe diagnosis may result in a smaller payment.
- A more serious diagnosis may result in a larger payment.
- The remaining cover can continue, allowing future claims if needed.
This approach recognises that many modern illnesses are survivable but can still have a significant financial impact on an individual or family.

Additional benefits included
Dementia and FrailCare Cover
A unique feature of Vitality's Serious Illness Cover is Dementia and FrailCare Cover. When the Serious Illness Cover term ends, clients can continue paying premiums and retain protection for later-life conditions such as:
- Alzheimer's disease
- Dementia
- Parkinson's disease
- Frailty
- Stroke-related care needs
Cover continues beyond the original Serious Illness term and pays according to the severity of the condition. Multiple claims may be possible if the condition becomes more severe over time.
Multiple claims capability
Unlike many traditional Critical Illness plans, Vitality's cover is designed to remain in force after a claim. If a client develops another qualifying condition, or their condition worsens, further claims may be possible until the available cover has been exhausted.
This is particularly valuable given that many serious illnesses are now being survived, increasing the likelihood of experiencing future health conditions during a lifetime.
Waiting List Benefit
Vitality includes a Waiting List Benefit for selected conditions requiring surgery. This allows a claim to be considered once a client has been added to an NHS waiting list for one of the covered procedures, potentially providing financial support earlier than many traditional policies.
Pregnancy Complications Benefit
If either the policyholder or their spouse experiences a qualifying complication during pregnancy, Vitality provides a fixed £5,000 payment.
Children's Serious Illness Cover
Vitality offers an optional Child Serious Illness Cover benefit which can be added to Life Cover, Income Protection or Serious Illness Cover plans.
What does it provide?
- Cover amounts available from £25,000 to £100,000.
- Covers children from birth until age 23.
- Provides a lump sum to help with medical expenses, time away from work, childcare costs, travel expenses and home adaptations where required.
Number of conditions covered
| Child cover level | Conditions covered |
|---|---|
| Child Serious Illness Cover 1X | 115 conditions |
| Child Serious Illness Cover 2X | 144 conditions |
| Child Serious Illness Cover 3X | 175 conditions |
If adult Serious Illness Cover is selected, the child automatically receives the equivalent level of cover.
Additional children's benefits
- Hospitalisation Benefit, paying £100 per night after 14 consecutive nights in hospital.
- Congenital Conditions Cover.
- Child Funeral Contribution.
- Child-specific Total Permanent Disability Cover.
Why Vitality is different
Vitality's approach reflects the reality that modern medicine means many serious illnesses are no longer immediately life-threatening. More people survive cancer, stroke and heart disease than ever before, but they may still face financial challenges, extended recovery periods and future health complications.
Rather than offering a simple "claim once and the policy ends" structure, Vitality is designed to provide support throughout a client's health journey through:
- Severity-based payouts.
- Cover for a wider range of medical conditions.
- The ability to claim more than once.
- Dementia and FrailCare protection in later life.
- Comprehensive children's cover.
- Additional benefits designed to provide support when it is needed most.
Summary
Vitality Serious Illness Cover is designed around the reality that many serious illnesses are now survivable but can still have a significant financial impact. Instead of a simple "claim or no claim" approach, it provides severity-based payouts, cover for a wider range of conditions, the ability to claim more than once, unique Dementia and FrailCare protection for later life, and one of the most comprehensive children's cover options available.
For many clients, the key differentiator is that the cover is designed to support them throughout a lifetime of health events rather than ending after a single claim.
